Why do I turn 6% into 0.06 before multiplying?

Percent means per hundred, so 6% is 6 divided by 100, or 0.06. On a hypothetical $250,000 amount, multiplying by 0.06 gives $15,000. Multiplying by 6 would give an answer 100 times too large. Before using the calculator, estimate the answer's size so a misplaced decimal is easier to catch.
