Residential Mortgages

Section 9 of 41

These clauses kick in when specific events happen: Prepayment Clause:The Question: "Can I pay off my 30-year loan in 5 years?"The Answer: Usually, yes! This clause outlines the right to pay off the debt early without penalty.Prepayment Penalty Clause:Some loans (less common in standard residential mortgages now) charge a fee if you pay off the loan too early. Why? The bank expected 30 years of interest payments. If you pay it off in 2 years, they lose that profit. The penalty recoups some of that lost profit.
