We have covered what you can't do. Now, let’s talk about the exceptions to the rule and what happens if you break the law. You might see a sign that says "No Children Allowed" and think, "Hey! That violates Familial Status!" usually, you would be right. But there is one major exception you need to know: Housing for Older Persons. The Fair Housing Act generally forbids discriminating against families with children. However, the government recognizes that seniors have different lifestyle needs. Therefore, certain communities are allowed to be "Adults Only." To legally ban children, a community must meet one of the two standards covered in the next section.
