Chapter 8

Section 22 of 41

If a consumer believes they have been discriminated against, their first stop is usually the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).The victim has 1 year from the date of the alleged discrimination to file a complaint with HUD. HUD investigates the claim, and tries to bring both parties together to reach a settlement (a "conciliation agreement").If HUD finds "reasonable cause" that discrimination occurred and no settlement is reached, the case goes to an administrative hearing or federal court. This process is free for the complainant, which makes it very accessible.
