DRE & Organizational Structure

The Division of Real Estate (DRE) is a specialized division within the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR). Its primary role is to provide the administrative and ministerial support necessary for the Florida Real Estate Commission (FREC) to function. While the Commission holds the regulatory power, the DRE performs the daily operations.Most state agencies are located in Tallahassee, but the DRE is headquartered in Orlando, to be centrally located and accessible to the real estate industry. The DRE is managed by a Director who is appointed by the Secretary of the DBPR. This appointment is subject to approval by a majority vote of the FREC. This checks-and-balances system ensures that both the Department and the Commission agree on the leadership of the Division.The FREC doesn't have its own separate staff. The DRE provides the staff and resources required to administer the law. DRE will process your application and issue your license. Their key responsibilities include: Ministerial Duties, which is a fancy way of saying record keeping. They maintain licensee records and handle the logistical aspects of Commission meetings. This specifically includes the preparation and maintenance of the minutes for all FREC meetings. These minutes serve as the official record of the Commission's decisions and discussions. The DRE handles official correspondence on behalf of the Commission. If someone files a complaint against you, the DRE investigators look into it, and DRE lawyers act as the prosecutors as the case goes before the FREC.
