A Development of Regional Impact refers to any large-scale project that, due to its size, character, or location, substantially affects the health, safety, or welfare of citizens across more than one county. These are typically massive undertakings like large shopping malls, sports stadiums, or airports that generate traffic and demand for resources extending far beyond the property boundaries. Because the impact spills over into neighboring jurisdictions, the approval process for a DRI is much more rigorous than standard zoning approvals and requires review at the state and regional levels.
