The Private Lawsuit - A victim does not have to go through HUD. They can bypass the agency and go straight to court.The victim has 2 years from the date of the alleged discrimination to file a civil suit in Federal District Court.If the victim wins, the court can award:Actual Damages: To cover humiliation, pain, and suffering.Punitive Damages: To punish the wrongdoer (and these can be massive).Legal Fees: The loser often pays the winner's attorney fees.
