Asbestos is a mineral fiber that was widely used in construction before 1978 for insulation, flooring, and siding because of its fire-resistant properties. It becomes dangerous when it is "friable," meaning it crumbles easily and releases microscopic fibers into the air. Inhaling these fibers can cause severe lung diseases, including mesothelioma. Remediation does not always mean removal; often, the safest method is encapsulation, which involves sealing the asbestos so that fibers cannot escape.
